Tunisia has visited more than 6 million tourists in 2018, up 16.9 percent in a year, a return to tourism levels prior to the 2015 attacks on the Bardo museum in the capital and a hotel in Sousse. As of September 30, 6.27 million people had entered the country according to government figures, more than the total number of tourists in 2014, of 6.07 million. Revenue was more than 1 billion euros ($ 1.031 billion), faster than the inflow of tourists with a growth rate of 27.6 percent in a year, but only two thirds of the € 1.59 billion revenue recorded in 2014.
Tunisian tourism minister Salma Loumi said after a good start to the tourist season that the expected 8 million tourists will come to Tunisia this year, exceeding the 7 million tourists registered in 2010, the reference year for Tunisian tourism.
European tourists and Russians accounted for the largest proportion of tourists to Tunisia, accounting for more than 44.9 percent, while the number of Moroccan tourists, who make up half the number of expatriates, or about 3 million people, was only 16.9 percent. The number of nights spent in hotels rose 24.7 percent, or 21.3 million nights, still down from the 24 million in the same period in 2014. The island of Djerba is the tourist destination that benefited most from the tourism boom with the number of tourists who have reached 51.8 percent in a year.
