The system is developed in millions of surveillance cameras, where artificial intelligence is used to select targets.
The system, known as the Eye of Dragonfly, has been used in Shanghai to track down hundreds of wanted criminals, according to reports.
The company, which developed the technology, said Shanghai-based Yitu Technology said the system was scanning images from the country's national database. These include photos of visitors to the city and those taken at many ports and airports.
"The system can do what was incredible just three years ago," said Zhou Long, chief executive officer and co-founder.
The system helped the police force in Shanghai track criminals in a city of more than 24 million people.
On the first day of its operation in Shanghai Metro, in January, the system identified a man who was required when he entered the station, according to SCMP reports.
After matching his face with the database, "Eye of the dragonfly" sent the picture to the police who arrested him in turn.
In the following three months, the regime helped police arrest 567 suspected criminals in the city's underground.
Mr. Zhou explained that the system could be used more than just police assistance in the future. He said the system is able to identify people who use ATMs, to make the PIN something of the past.
