The Swiss engineering group ABB announced on Saturday its project to build a new plant in Shanghai, China, at a cost of $ 150 million.
The new plant will be near the ABB robotics technology complex in China and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2020 and produce equipment for China and other countries in Asia.
China is the second biggest market for ABB after the United States.
"Shanghai has become a vital center for advanced technology leadership, for the ABB Group and for the world," said Ulrich Spiehofer, chief executive officer of the group.
China is expanding its workforce of robots with rising human labor costs. ABB said one out of three devices sold in 2017 worldwide went to China, which bought nearly 138,000 devices.
The new plant, which will be built on an area of 75,000 square feet, will use software that allows humans and robots to work together safely, the company said, adding that its daily machines, designed to work side by side, will also perform many assembly tasks for small parts needed for manufacturing Robots.
A spokesman said the ABB machines, which will play roles including automotive manufacturing and electronics assembly, will manufacture robots for many industries at the Shanghai plant.
The company did not disclose the number of new workers in the factory, but said it would increase the dependence on labor from robotics, which currently exceeds two thousand devices (APB) in China
