Portugal's Jose Peseiro has been appointed coach of Sporting Lisbon on a rescue mission for the team, which is facing an unprecedented crisis.

"In these difficult times, it is very important to create a climate of stability and confidence. We know what we want to rebalance the club," the 58-year-old said.

Peseiro takes charge of Sporting for the second time after coaching him in the 2004-05 season, leading him to the Europa League final, losing at home to CSKA Moscow.

According to the local press, the duration of the Peseiro contract, which has trained clubs in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Greece and even Romania, is one year renewable.

Sporting Club president Senisa Mikhaelovic was released on Saturday after less than 10 days on the job by club president Bruno Di Carvalho.

"He has decided to put an end to the trial period and to terminate his contract (Mikhailovich)," Jose Jose Sintra, the new president of the capital, told a news conference. "We will soon be looking for a new coach to be presented to the press in the period up to Monday at the latest."

De Carvalho, 46, a controversial figure, was appointed on June 18 by a Serbian coach for a three-year contract, five days before being sacked by the club's general assembly.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, in the era of Di Carvalho, was particularly emboldened by mid-May after a group of his fans stormed the training center, assaulted the players and training staff, smashed the dressing rooms and terrified the club's staff.

After the crisis erupted, nine players, including internationals William Carvalho, Gelson Martins, Bruno Fernandez, Roy Patricio and Dutchman Bash Dost, unilaterally terminated their contracts. Georgi Gios left the club "friendly" and signed with Al Hilal.
