Regardless of the known risks of ice cream for diabetics and obesity, ice cream has the potential to cause disease. In 2015, five people were taken to a hospital in Kansas, and three died after eating ice cream contaminated with Listeria.

These are rare, as food manufacturers have controls and strategies to ensure the safety of ingredients. However, ice cream can pose a risk after purchase, if it is melted and frozen.

This usually happens when ice cream is removed from the refrigerator, left to melt and then returned to it before being taken out again.

The ice cream melts very quickly at room temperature, which is ideal for bacteria such as, Listeria. Using a spoon that is contaminated with ice cream is a common and dangerous mistake.

Several types of bacteria produce an odor that indicates that the fruits or products have exceeded their best, but Listeria can reproduce in the fridge a smell or taste.
