Previous studies have shown that smokers are at higher risk for atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart arrhythmia.
The increase in smoking means increased risk, but stopping the habit seems to reduce the risk considerably, the researchers wrote in the European Journal of Preventive Medicine.
"Atrial fibrillation ... a risk factor for a number of other heart and blood vessel diseases and premature death," said lead author of the study Dagvin O'Neal, a researcher at the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.
The team analyzed data from 29 studies on atrial fibrillation rates in more than half a million people, current and former smokers and people who never smoked, in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan.
Compared to those who never smoked, researchers found that current smokers were at a higher risk of atrial fibrillation at 32 percent, while former smokers were 9 percent more likely to be infected.
The risk to current smokers was 33 percent higher than that of previous smokers.
"Increasing the number of cigarettes means an increased risk of atrial fibrillation," Unite said in an e-mail.
He added that smoking increases the risk of other diseases that may predispose to atrial fibrillation such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease and heart failure.
