Although it sells its smart phones under the old brand Nokia, HMD Global Oy is still young, founded in December 2016, less than two years ago. As a result, it is impressive that this nascent Finnish company is among the top 10 smartphones in the world, at least according to the latest statistics from Counterpoint Research, a market research firm.
By comparing the second quarter of this year with the second quarter of last year, HMD Global Oy shipments grew by 782 percent. All in all, this means 4.5 million units, equivalent to half the shipments of the most established companies in the smartphone market, such as LG and Lenovo. It is interesting to find that HTC and Sony are out of the top ten.
This puts HMD Global Oy in ninth position globally with a small percentage of total shipments. The first three brands shipped 46 percent of smartphones in the second quarter of this year to put the performance of HMD Global Oy in perspective.
Other companies that worked well were Huawei, which raised its market share by 41 percent, allowing it to overtake Apple, and Xioami, which raised its market share by 43 percent in an attempt to narrow the gap with Apple. For Samsung and LG, they lost some of their market share. Samsung's market share fell by 11 percent, while LG's market share fell by 23 percent, at least as compared to the same period last year.
These statistics only take smart phones into account. Do not forget that traditional Nokia phones are among the top three globally.
