The global warming is expected to exceed 1.5 degrees, the ceiling set by the Paris Climate Convention "by about 2040" if emissions continue at the current rate, threatening a slowdown in economic growth, a draft UN report said. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said governments still had a chance to work, but that the increase should not exceed one and a half degrees in light of the rapid and far-reaching transformations of the global economy.
The final draft, issued on June 4 and obtained by Reuters, is due to be published in October in South Korea after being reviewed and ratified by governments. The draft, after being adopted, will be the main scientific guidance manual on climate change. "If the emissions continue at the current rate, the temperature rise due to human activities will exceed 1.5 degrees by about 2040," the draft said.
