Turkey is aiming to make the first local car in its history. To achieve this, five local companies have announced a partnership to accelerate R & D. These include: Anatolia Group, BMC, Kök Group, Turkcell and Zorlu Holding.
Erdogan leads the campaign to develop a Turkish model
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly stressed his enthusiasm for the development of a local car industry competing with Western and Japanese models. He recently revealed that the first pilot version of the Turkish model will appear in the streets in 2019, with the possibility to put the production model officially in 2021.
Erdogan said last November: "I want to own the first local car produced, provided I pay for myself ... I encourage everyone not to hesitate, because we are determined to produce a car of Turkey design and the best techniques for us and the world."
Erdogan has repeatedly said he wants Turkey to be Turkey's first production vehicle with a hybrid or electric power generator as part of its effort to ease pollution in Turkish cities.
