The study found that the application of Strava encouraged 83 percent of the survey participants to run, while 55 percent said activities organized in local parks encouraged them to run jogging regularly.
At the same time, a separate British study published in the American Journal of Psychology found that any physical activity reduces the incidence of depression.
An international team of researchers, including experts from King's College London, analyzed data from 49 different studies including information on depression and physical activity.
Experts looked at 266,000 people and found that about a quarter of a million people with no physical activity were at risk of depression.
"Those who exercise and perform various physical activities were less likely to develop depression," they said.
