A non-sugar drink raises the risk of overweight, type 2 diabetes, dementia and stroke among adults in the United States, a panel of doctors and researchers warned.
Children are more likely to get sick because eating diet drinks at this early age can create lifelong behaviors, the committee said.
Researchers at the American Heart Association noted that non-sugar soda drinks are often consumed by people who normally consume large amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages as a way to get rid of this bad habit.
The report pointed to a number of previous self-surveys, where data showed that adults drank an average of 16.2 ounces of sugar-sweetened drinks a day in 2000, and decreased to 8.4 per day in 2014.
The decline was more severe among children, from 19 ounces a day in 2000 to 8.6 ounces in 2014. The American Heart Association recommended in 2016 that children should not consume more than 6 teaspoons of sugar per day.
At the same time, researchers recommended that children should stay away from low-calorie drinks because of lack of data on the long-term effects of the drinks.
The researchers agreed that non-sugar drinks are not the best alternative, with more healthy alternatives, such as water and low-fat and fat-free milk.
